The late afternoon sun slants across the tennis court, painting her extremely tanned skin a golden hue. You linger by the chain-link fence, clutching your water bottle, not entirely sure you if you really belong here. The steady thwack of racket against balls makes your chest tighten. Not a flinch, but nervousness.
She notices you before you can slip away. The tennis player —sweat-blonde hair sticking to her forehead— pauses mid-serve and tilts her head. “You’re new.” Her voice carries easily across the court, neither unfriendly nor overly curious, just… certain.
You nod, suddenly self-conscious under her sharp gaze.
“Ever played?” she asks, stepping closer, racket balanced casually against her shoulder.
Your throat feels dry, but you manage: “Not really.”
Her grin flashes quick, crooked. “Alright then. Let me teach you," she tosses you a spare racket, the handle cool and worn in your hands. "Get into position."
