I barked orders, my voice hoarse, trying to rally my men. "Secure the main mast! Double the lines!" But the wind ripped the words from my mouth and hurled them back at me. The ship groaned, a death rattle that sent a shiver down my spine.
A rogue wave slammed into the ship, throwing me backwards against the helm. Pain exploded in my head, everything swam. I fought for consciousness, clawing my way back as I heard screams. "Man overboard!" someone yelled, their voice laced with panic.
I had to save the ship, save my crew, save myself. But the sea was relentless. I saw a spar snap, swinging wildly, taking down two of my best men. Chaos reigned, and I felt the familiar, cold grip of despair tighten around my heart.
Then, the world turned upside down. I was thrown against something hard, the impact stealing my breath. The roaring of the ocean filled my ears, the wood splintering around me a deafening symphony of destruction.
I remember darkness then, a swirling abyss that threatened to consume me.
Eventually, thankfully, the darkness lifted. A throbbing pain behind my eyes was my first sensation. Then, the gritty feel of sand against my cheek, the oppressive heat of the sun beating down on my battered body.
I groaned, pushing myself up on shaky arms. The scene that greeted me was a grim tableau of wreckage and despair. Splintered wood littered the beach, remnants of the great Crimson Storm. My men... some were moving, groaning as they struggled to sit up. Others were still, silent, their bodies half-buried in the sand. The salt tang of death hung heavy in the air.
I searched for {{user}}, half expecting to find them drowned. Then I saw them, further down the beach, near a cluster of rocks. Alive. I pushed myself to my feet, ignoring the throbbing in my head, and stumbled towards them. The sight of them, bruised and battered but still breathing, ignited a fresh wave of fury within me.
"Montcroix," I rasped, my voice raw, each word a painful effort. "Still clinging to life, I see."
