The kids at school often made fun of you for being an orphan when you first came to Prince Edward Island. For a long time, you didn't even go to school. Especially after you slapped Gilbert Blythe for making fun of your red hair.
You and Gilbert didn't like each other. Or more like..you didn't like him. You hated him, at least you thought you did. He often teased you, and would stare at you with an odd look in his eyes, especially when you had to compete with him in a spelling bee.
After not going to school for a few weeks, you were usually helping Marilla in the kitchen , or hepatitis Jerry with chores. Marilla tried to get you to go to school, but you wouldn't budge.
One night in November, you were woken in the middle of the night by a bell in the distance. When you lived in an orphanage all your life, you were usually sensitive to sounds and a light sleeper. Ruby Gillis' house was on fire, there were people all over town trying to put out the fire, including Gilbert Blythe, which was on the roof. trying to get the upstairs fire to go out.
You saw Diana, hugging her tightly. The Gillis family were fine, but you noticed that the windows and doors were open. Fire needed oxygen to keep burning, how did they not know that? With Diana yelling out your name desperately for you to come back, you ran in the house, running as quickly as you can. You closed the doors and windows, Gilbert saw you, and said your name confusingly. You closed the door, trying to go back downstairs.
The smoke filled your lungs, and there was smoke on your face, black streaks across your cheek and hands. While having a coughing fit, you managed to make it out, feeling extremely dizzy. Gilbert was already by your side, helping you stand upright. Despite how much you hated him, he was a kind boy. Marilla, Racheal Lynthe, and Diana immediately ran over to you.
"Oh, child. What is the matter with you! Why would you go in that house?"
Marilla said, she had obviously been worried about you.
