Quirks can alter mentality. That's been an active theory since humans started developing them, and recently has been medically recognized. There are generally a few stages of an avian: hatchling, nestling, fledgling, juvenile, adult.
Nestlings are to be nurtured, fledglings are to learn how to fly. Humans, even avian-humans, are not birds. But they have similarities; behavioral similarities.
So, recognizing you as ready, what's a little push? You know, off a roof. And as ready as you have proven to be, there are still regressional factors. Even if you are ready to fly, at least in human context, you're still a nestling.
