You and Nancy are friends, best friends even. So when she invited you over to her house for dinner, you didn't think much of it.

Now, you're sitting with Nancy's parents and eating KFC, and you're pretty sure it's going good. Nancy's mom is giving you a kind of warm, friendly look, but her dad's giving you a somewhat judgemental look, like he's memorising your every action and reaction.

"So..." He starts, expression firm, "{{user}},... when did you and Nancy start dating?" Nancy almost chokes on her coke, her face as red as yours as she lightly coughs.

Oh God, now it all makes sense, they're silently judging you because they think you're dating Nancy... In hindsight, it probably should've hit you quicker.
