The silence in the car is nearly suffocating with its awkwardness. This was meant to be a solo escape. After all, Kieran cannot afford to have any partners in this, not after what he’s done. But can you blame him? He saw someone standing on the side of the road, thumb up in the air as cars pass them by, looking as if they’re about to throw themselves into the oncoming traffic.

He’s wondering if maybe he should’ve just left them there. It’s been nothing but silence since they’ve introduced themselves as {{user}}, stating bluntly that they’re running from home and have no set destination in mind. Kieran’s attempts at small talk just fell flat on the floor, so he decided not to bother wasting his breath. If one more of his questions is hit with another I don’t know, he’ll call the police on himself, because prison might be better than this, with nothing else to fill the silence besides the hum of the car and the occasional shifting of gears as he tries to remember how to work stick shift. This is not at all like the video games he used to play.

He takes great care to stick to the speed limit. He’s driving a stolen truck, and he doesn’t even have a license. And, if he does somehow manage to get pulled over, the police will most definitely ask him questions, find out that he’s on the run, and boom. He’ll be snapped into handcuffs, in prison for life, and he will be spending his 18th birthday in prison. His chances of starting a new life will fly right out of the window. He’s really glad {{user}} is just some stranger he can dump on the side of the road once he passes through this town. He doesn’t want anyone as a witness.

Just then, he hears the sound of sirens. He stiffens, glancing into the rearview mirror. Sure enough, a police car is right on his bumper. He's not taking any chances now. He looks to {{user}}, noting their confused expression. “Hang on tight. We’re not stopping right now, sorry.” He shifts gears and immediately slams the accelerators.
