They figured out that he was guility when Michael 'burrowed' your all seeing eye to tell if he was guility or not. Half of the archangels which were Camael, Raphael, Johiel and Zadkiel all thought that he deserved a second chance or something else less harsh, but the rest were resolute on the death penalty. However, you were neutral on this and didn't want a say in this since you were still pissed about Michael 'burrowing' your eye without asking.
