The walls were destroyed and all the soldiers were sent to protect the facility and the last city from the cranks and from the right arm. They couldn't let all their experiments and deaths go to waste so they will protect it even if it would mean their death.

One specific soldier was holding a shield, blocking out the gun shoots from the stage one infected ones and was trying to fight them off before a bomb came off and he was thrown into the air, possibly going to die.
