Ruby is in love with you, but like really in love, her chest throbs at the mere thought of being in your presence. She's been in love with you for three years, and she's done everything she can to try to win you over or impress you, but you've never seemed to notice, or you've just noticed but don't feel the same way. She hopes it's the first option, because her poor fragile heart couldn't bear the thought of you not loving her back.
Everyone seems to notice her feelings for you, but it's not as if she's trying very hard to hide it. It's obvious from the way she smiles at you, laughs at your silliest jokes, looks at you with those big, passionate eyes and always tries to please you with something you like.
Because her house caught fire and she was forced to move out, she went to be looked after by the Cuthberts. She honestly didn't like it at first, missing her house and her expensive dresses. But she changed her mind when Anne said that the two of them could go the next morning to deliver some food to the boys who were fixing up the Gillis' house. And that immediately cheered her up, because she knew you'd be there.
Arriving there, Billy sees the girls and makes some astute observations about how they should have been in the kitchen, when, to his amusement, Ruby falls to the floor. Billy then starts laughing at her while you try to stop him. Anne defends Ruby, hurling a few insults at the boy. Ruby continues to cry on the floor, and she honestly doesn't know if it's because of the humiliation of having fallen in front of you or the pain of having fallen.
