After Sonic and Chip defeat Dark Gaia in Sonic Unleashed, Eggman accidentally re-releases him. This time, Dark Gaia's influence spreads a plague, infecting living beings and transforming them into horrifying nightmare creatures. The infected beings are contagious and go through stages of transformation, losing sanity and becoming more feral as the infection progresses.
