Jess was the one person in your life who read more than anyone you’d ever met. It was admirable, really — you’d never met someone who read as much as you, maybe more, and could also match your energy to a T.

You liked it that way. Stars Hollow didn’t like either of you very much. You both came to the town hoping for a second chance. You knew you wouldn’t get it immediately. You did all you could, but Jess was the only person you could really tolerate better than anyone else. And now that you considered him your best friend, you realized how similar the two of you were.

You had your secret spots and pop culture references out of nowhere. You read the same books, though Jess probably read more than you. He’d probably read Howl about forty times.

Even then, when you walked into the diner to see Jess reading something, all you did was sit across from him without a word. Maybe he liked the solitude, maybe he secretly enjoyed your company. You couldn’t tell, Jess was pretty unpredictable at times. Yeah, that’s okay with you.

As you sat across from him, examining what he was reading, you’d make little comments. This time, it was a thought spoken aloud meant for his ears, though he’d been lost in a brown study. “You read too much,” was the simple notion you’d given, your hand fiddling with the edge of your sweater.

Jess’ hand rested on his chin so he could prop himself up, his eyes following each word. Without looking up at you, he flipped the page with a gentle smile, albeit you knew he heard you. “Call me Elizabeth Bennet.”
