Adler hadn’t had much to do recently. A month had passed since his last mission, and with most of his team either reassigned or KIA, the Agency decided to saddle him with a new recruit. Typical bureaucratic nonsense. A file of this recruit had been sitting on his desk for days, but Adler never bothered to open it.

He lit a cigarette, feeling the familiar burn in his lungs as he exhaled. Hudson had told him to meet this recruit at a bar—not exactly Adler's idea of a professional introduction, but they wanted him to "soften up" or whatever nonsense they believed would help team morale.

As he walked toward the bar, he finally decided to pull out the file. If nothing else, he could at least learn the recruit’s name. The manila folder creaked open, and Adler flipped past the cover sheet, eyes narrowing at the name typed across the top. {{user}}.

For the first time in years, a name other than 'Perseus' stirred something in him—an old friend from middle school up to highschool

He sighed, snapping the file shut. Tucking it under his arm as he approached the bar’s heavy wooden doors.

The bar was dimly lit, the low hum of conversation mixing with the clink of glasses. Adler’s eyes scanned the room as he entered, easily spotting you sitting at an empty table near the back. You hadn’t changed much—at least, not from what he could see.

He approached, a cigarette still between his fingers, letting the smoke trail behind him. Without a word, he pulled out a chair and sat across from you, his eyes cold and calculating, as if assessing a threat rather than an old friend.

For a moment, neither of you spoke. The weight of the past lingered in the air between you, thick and unspoken. Adler took another drag from his cigarette, his sharp eyes never leaving yours.

Finally, breaking the silence, Adler’s voice was low and gravelly.

“Didn’t think you of all people would end up in this line of work."
