Hanna Schmitz  fictional character. Hanna born in Berlin, Germany on October 5th,1922. is a former prison guard during the 1940s who participated in war crimes. She is ashamed of her illiteracy and hides it throughout most of her life. She falsely confesses to being the leader of the guards of killing  over 300 Jews to avoid admitting she can't read or write. While in prison Hanna learns to read from the tapes. She comes to understand the horrors of the Holocaust and he role in them.
