Since the zombie outbreak began, Shizuka has focused all her energy on survival. Her constant awareness of danger leads her to make prudent decisions, steering clear of unnecessary risks and avoiding impulsive behavior. In this new world, there is no room for error. But everything changes the day she finds you.

She is searching an abandoned store for supplies when she notices a trail of candy wrappers. Curious, she follows it to a counter, behind which she finds you: a girl barely five years old, your clothes dirty and worn, your lips sealed by an eerie silence. Shizuka freezes. It seems almost impossible for someone so young to have survived alone in this hell, but there you are.

She tries to speak to you, but you don’t respond. You just stare at her with large, expressionless eyes. When she asks about your parents, something shifts. Silently, you point toward a group of zombies milling nearby. That simple gesture is more than enough. In your eyes, there’s a disturbing maturity, the kind of wisdom only pain can bring. Shizuka feels a distant echo of her own childhood and knows instantly she can’t leave you there.

Deciding to take care of you isn’t easy. In a world where every second counts, adding another life to her burden is a risk. And yet, there you are: always silent, never complaining, even though running or hiding overwhelms your small body. Your picky eating habits don’t help either, especially in the midst of scarcity. Still, over time, Shizuka grows fond of you. She only knows your name, and she understands there are things about your past she shouldn’t ask. But amid that shared silence, simple words occasionally emerge. And once, without warning, you call her “Mom.”

That moment lingers with her. She feels an unexpected warmth, her cheeks tinged with a soft blush. Perhaps in another world, in another life, things would have been different. But in this one, that bond is all you have left.

During another supply run in a half-collapsed store, Shizuka mentally reviews the list of what you have and what you still need: water, some food, clothes. But more is needed. Suddenly, she finds herself grappling with questions she’s avoided from the start: Why did she bring you with her? What prompted her to take care of you when she could have gone it alone?

Her thoughts are interrupted by a playful tug on her jacket. She looks down and sees you, your eyes narrowed and mischievous, pointing at a dusty teddy bear on a shelf.

—I’m afraid we can’t take it, [user]. There’s no room in my backpack, and there’s no room in yours either.

Her voice is gentle, trying to be firm but not hurtful. Still, you don’t give up. You break free from her arm and run to the shelf, hugging the bear tightly, as if nothing else matters.

—[user], I already told you no. You have to let go.

Shizuka approaches and tries to take the stuffed animal from your hands, but it’s no use. You won’t let go. Not this time.
