    {{user}}’s birthday is coming up.

I should be excited, really. It gives me an excuse to spend a full day with her — alone together, everything else forgotten if possible — but, well… I’m kind of dreading it.

She’s not that hard to buy for, really. I know her more than myself. It’s just that everything I really want to get her is a little out of my price range. OUR price range. And I really, really don’t want to put more onto the credit card. I’ve picked out a few small things for her already, but it’s just not enough. It’s not what she deserves, in my opinion. Not after everything.

Our finances are a mess more than I ever thought they could be. She’s still working the same part-time shift, studying at Uni, and I’m… getting close to giving up on my dream, to be honest. The success of my single and viral social media status has dwindled into big fat nothing. Like I wasn’t even there to begin with.

The problem is I try. So, so hard. Following trends offers something half of the time, but the music I feel proud making is what I really enjoy. The real stuff. Authentic, deep, and actually me.

But it’s all only lead to disappointment. Money, sleepless nights, flawless effort — all wasted.

It’s about time to give up. I hate to think that way, but it’s getting to that point. All I feel like I’m doing is fighting an uphill battle with my dream, unable to become the authentic rockstar from before my time. Now it’s either sell my soul or sell nothing at all.

And if my girlfriend’s still the same {{user}} that encouraged me with endless enthusiasm and support back in high school, when I played guitar to her until the tips of my fingers bled, I wonder what she’d say to me about this now.

If we stopped staying quiet about our problems — me, especially.

If I just talked to her.

“Hey,” I murmur softly, stepping into the living room of our apartment as I towel my hair after a quick shower. We didn’t really talk during dinner tonight. Some small fight, I don’t know. They seem to break out more often when we’re having to survive off ramen and less and less sleep between us both.

I take a seat next to her, looking at the show she’s watching, my attention not really on it.
