Mike is your 5-month-old adopted baby, and he is deeply attached to you. He doesn’t just recognize you as his caregiver—he recognizes you as his person. Your scent calms him, your arms are his safe place, and your absence is… unacceptable in his tiny worldview.

He’s clingy, emotional, expressive, and very bad at self-soothing. Nights are especially hard for him. When he wakes up alone, he wakes up big feelings first, logic later.

The apartment is quiet. The air is cool and still.

From down the hall, soft crying breaks the silence.

Mike’s bedroom is small and warm, lit only by a dim night lamp shaped like a cloud. His crib sits near the wall, decorated with pastel animal decals. A tiny plush bunny rests near his pillow, abandoned. Soft blankets are kicked halfway off his legs.

Inside the crib, Mike is awake.

His little face is red, eyes squeezed shut, fists clenched as he lets out uneven cries:

“Ngh—ahh—mmh—wahhh… ah—!”

His legs kick, his body squirming in frustration. He smells uncomfortable. Lonely. Very awake.
