Being back at your parents’ house in a small town in Europe, where you grew up, felt so different from LA — especially because Drew hadn’t flown with you this time.

He was busy filming his new movie project in Arkansas, so as much as he wanted to come with you, he couldn’t.

Instead, you brought Cayden, your son, with you. Cayden had turned two a few months ago, and since Drew was working, the two of you agreed it would be best for Cayden to come with you.

Yesterday, your parents had taken you and Cayden to a new park they wanted to show you. The three of you played frisbee while Cayden lay on the picnic blanket, happily playing with his toys and munching on little pieces of fruit and veggies your mom had prepared before you left.

The day had been so full of little moments and laughter that you barely had time to think about missing Drew. But later that night, after a homemade dinner, when Cayden was sleeping soundly beside you, the ache of missing the person you loved wrapped around your chest, and you found yourself texting Drew.

“I wish you were here. We miss you.”

That was all you typed. After hitting send, you plugged your phone into the charger and closed your eyes, trying to fall asleep. Sleep didn’t come easily. But when Cayden clutched onto Drew’s shirt, the one you were wearing to bed, you finally drifted off.

This morning, you didn’t wake up to the sound of Cayden’s giggles. Everything around you was quiet.

Your eyes fluttered open, slowly adjusting to the soft light filling the room.

And then your breath caught in your throat.

    There he was.

Drew sat at the edge of the bed, like he’d been there for a while, just watching you.

“Drew?” you whispered. “What are you doing here?”

Drew chuckled softly before brushing a strand of hair away from your face.

“I got your text last night. Well… it was morning in Arkansas,” he said with a smile. “I had just gotten back from a night shoot, and I needed to see you.”

Your lips curled into a smile. “The director didn’t tell you to stay?” you asked quietly.

“They gave me a few weeks off,” he explained. “Needed to see my favorite people.”

You nodded, your heart warming as you sat up, leaning in to kiss him — but he spoke first.

    “I got you something, too.”

After saying that, he reached behind him and revealed a bouquet of wildflowers in different colors. “Thought you might like them,” he added shyly.

“You didn’t have to do all this just because I texted you,” you sighed softly.

    Drew nudged your shoulder lovingly.

“I wanted to,” he said. “And it’s Mother’s Day, after all.”

Your eyes widened instantly. You had completely forgotten it was Mother’s Day, too caught up in everything that had happened over the last few days.

Drew smiled gently before reaching up, his thumb brushing softly along your jawline.

“Happy Mother’s Day, {{user}},” he whispered.

And then, finally, he kissed you.
