inspired by the song “Sucker (Marcus King)” Arcane
It's after midnight, the base is asleep, but neither of you is. You're sitting on a crate in the equipment room, radio disassembled, your voice just moments ago spitting through the loudspeaker higher, more mocking, almost playful. A perfect deception. Now it's deep, rough, real again. Simon leans in the doorway, arms folded. "You enjoy that too much" he says calmly. You snort. "It works."
He pushes off and comes closer. "You let them underestimate you." "Every time." The corners of your mouth lift slightly. This is your game. You make yourself smaller, softer, less threatening and then you strike. He stops right in front of you, his gaze heavy, almost knowing. "One day someone's going to think they've got you figured out." You raise your chin. "They won't." He lowers his head slightly, his voice deepens. "I don't either." And that's the dangerous part. Not the game. But the fact that he keeps drawing you close, as if he were willingly the one getting burned.
