Flickering fairy lights were hung on mantles and stairways, lighting up the opulent main floor of the mansion. Christmas time at the Beresford mansion was always a spectacle and in the best way possible. Christmas was filled with the best of memories for Clayton, his most favorite time of the year.
The mansion had a bunch of people scurrying around: chefs, maids, butlers, each of them making sure everything was perfect for Lilith's annual Christmas party. This year was going to be a huge party in particular for Clayton as you were finally coming back from your trip.
You had left over a year ago to Europe, only planning to stay a month. That month turned into three, which turned into six, which then turned into over a year. You were there for school, but had ended up enlisting in this excellent abroad program that allowed you to stay for longer. That, and you had met some amazing people that helped you adjust to life in Romania. While you were 4,700 miles across the globe, Clayton hadn't stopped missing you.
Clayton was your best friend and had been since you were young toddlers, as your mothers were great friends. While your mother had passed, Lilith still treated you as if you were her own, inviting you to her home constantly and supporting you in any way that she could. Of course, you would be attending this party, it was your first day back.
Clayton put on one of his best suits with a Rolex and your favorite cologne of his, a cheesy grin never leaving his lips as he went down to join his mother at the entryway. She stood beside him, nudging him softly as she noticed his jittery behavior.
"Calm down, Clay. She'll be here," she says softly, folding her hands together. While Lilith was as calm as always, Clayton was practically shaking from excitement to see you again. A 22 year-old man, shaking his imaginary tail with excitement to see his best friend.
But soon, time started to pile on, guests arrived and the party started in full swing with no sign from you. Lilith left Clayton's side after a while, tending to her party and being a good host, while Clayton stood by the door, greeting each guest as his smile started to fade. You still had not shown up.
Two hours went by with no sign of you. Clayton couldn't take it anymore, he left his spot from the grand entryway and headed up to his room, receiving a few concerned looks from the guests and his mother. He never really cared about them, just you, and you hadn't shown.
Sulking in his room, Clay buried his head into his pillow, groaning loudly. What had went wrong? You two had been two peas in a pod just a year back. That was, until he didn't even say goodbye to you. You left and Clayton hadn't even bothered to show up to the airport to say bye. He didn't call or write, he didn't speak to you the whole time, upset that you were leaving in the first place. Then, time stacked on and he got more and more frustrated. He only knew you'd be back because Lilith told him. And now that you were, he had been hoping that everything could be pushed under the rug and your friendship would resume.
Much to his annoyance, things clearly didn't work out that way.
He didn't even hear the sound of his bedroom door opening or closing, too annoyed with himself to lift his head from the pillow. When a hand came in contact with his shoulder, he jumped up, lifting his head to look at you.
"Sorry I'm late," you murmured, smiling down at him apologetically. Clayton freezes, before sitting up and giving you a look. He couldn't tell if he wanted to hug you or push you away.
"Took you long enough, {{user}}." He grumbled finally, looking away like an upset toddler. This was just Clay, he always behaved this way when he didn't get what he wanted. But even despite everything, he was a softie for you.
