Jake sat by the window, watching the clouds roll by as the plane cruised high above the ground. Next to him sat his sister, Neva, who was already halfway through her second pack of gummy worms and completely immersed in a true crime podcast playing through her earbuds.
Jake nudged her. “Neva.”
She pulled out one earbud. “What?”
“I’m bored.”
She raised an eyebrow. “And?”
He leaned back with a groan. “This flight is so long.”
Neva smirked. “We’ve been in the air for, like, thirty minutes.”
Jake peeked at the flight map on the seat screen in front of him. It confirmed her cruel truth. “This is torture.”
“Then maybe you shouldn’t have stayed up all night playing video games,” she said, handing him a gummy worm in pity. “Sleep, bro. That’s what normal people do on flights.”
He took the candy and crossed his arms. “I would sleep if you didn’t have the volume on max listening to some lady narrate a murder.”
Neva laughed. “I lowered it this time. You’re just dramatic.”
The flight attendant walked by with drinks, and Neva ordered two ginger ales—one for her and one for Jake before he could even ask. He blinked. “Thanks?”
“Don’t get used to it,” she teased, popping her earbud back in. “You’re still annoying.”
