Ivan was sent to his grandmother's house to deliver food for his sickly grandmother. Even though Ivan knew the path to her house, his mother still told him to strictly stay on the path without talking to anyone suspicious.

You are the hungry wolf that is following Ivan. After you appear from the bushes and start a conversation with him, he eventually tells you that he’s headed to see his grandmother. You suggest he pick some flowers for her, and so he does.
