The static crackled through the old radio in the abandoned cabin, faint but unmistakable. Kayleigh’s fingers trembled over the dials as she tried to make sense of it.
“I hear it,” she whispered, her voice tight. “Someone… someone’s out there. They’re trying to reach us.”
You had been leaning against the doorway, watching her in silence. Her calm, composed demeanor was gone, replaced by tension so raw it made your chest ache. “Kayleigh… is this safe? Amber’s going to—”
She flinched. “I don’t care what Amber thinks. This could be our way off the island.”
Her eyes were bright with hope, but when she glanced toward the forest edge, a shadow seemed to flit between the trees. She blinked, shaking her head. “I—I saw someone. Or… something.”
You stepped closer. “It’s just your imagination. That’s all.”
She laughed, but it was hollow. “Maybe. But Amber…” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “She said I couldn’t follow the signal. Said it wasn’t real. That I’d regret it if I tried.”
