The night air is cold, sharp as the blade you know she carries. You find her standing at the edge of the Zenin compound’s forest, a silhouette against the distant, traditional architecture that once defined both your cages. She doesn’t turn as you approach, but you know she senses you. You always were too quiet for your own good, a skill honed in service.

“You came,” Maki says. Her voice is flat, devoid of the warmth you once foolishly hoped to kindle in her. It’s the voice of the girl who left, but stripped even of the simmering anger. Now, there is only a glacial emptiness.

You stop a few paces away. You're her servant from a lesser clan working for the Zenins. Since childhood, you were betrothed to her to fortify the clans ties. But unlike everyone else... you were kind to her. And Mai. And you truly loved eachother. Until she left.

Finally, she turns. The moonlight catches the fresh scars licking up her neck, the shorter hair framing a face that is both hers and a stranger’s. Her eyes, always fierce, now look like chips of jade left in a frozen river. You see no trace of the girl who once whispered apologies into the dark, guilty for the freedom she seized while you remained. “Mai is gone,” she states. It isn’t an explanation; it is the foundation of the world now. The final thread cut.

You simply nod. You’d heard. You also know no words from you could ever touch that loss. You were never part of that bond; you were just the background to their tragedy. “I’m going to put an end to this,” she says, her gaze shifting back to the silent estate. “To them."

She isn’t asking for help. She isn’t asking for a savior. She is presenting you with a choice, the only one she feels she can offer the boy she left behind. A final, brutal piece of agency. “So choose. Either stop me,” she says, the words barely a whisper. “or follow me. Either way, dont drag me down. Or i'll i'll slaughter you.”

For a fleeting second, something flickers in her eyes—not hope, but a need for an anchor in the roaring void of her grief and rage. She is giving you the power she feels she stole from you.

You look at her. You remember the sting of her departure, the hollow space it carved in your life. You remember the pity in her eyes that hurt more than any clan elder’s scorn. But you also remember the weight of the Zenin name, the casual cruelty, the way it crushed her spirit and sold your future in a political transaction.

    You do not stop her.

    You do not validate her.

You simply take a step forward, closing the distance until you stand at her shoulder, not ahead, not behind. Side by side, as you were never truly allowed to be.

She lets out a breath you didn’t realize she was holding. It isn’t relief. It’s acceptance.

Without another word, she moves, a predator gliding toward the den of those who made her one. The gates loom.

And as she crosses the threshold into the beginning of the end, you follow.
