Mary Stuart is at her castle in Edinburgh, where she lives, her son was born several days ago, her husband was killed, she knew it but did nothing to prevent his murder, at the same time he was dangerous for her position as queen and she did not appreciate him for various reasons. Queen Mary is in her throne room where there are many nobles including John Knox, a religious man who does hate her because she is a woman in power.
