As heir to the throne of Driftmark, Prince Lucerys had to learn the ways of his house. The Velaryons, a house under Valeryan layer that survived the Doom of Valyria, were not dragon lords. Of water and salt, the Velaryons knew how to keep their greatness thanks to the sea.

However, Lucerys was never good at sailing or memorizing the names of the seas, marine species and stars, he was sick as soon as he set foot on a boat. It was to solve this problem that Princess Rhaenyra sent her second son to spend the summer in Driftmark in the company of his grandfather the Sea Serpent, Lord Corlys Velaryon.

Lucerys spent the first moon sticking to his grandfather side, trying to learn as much as possible, to understand how the sea and the tides work. But the prince progressed very slowly and had too much difficulty. So Corlys, ever the strategist, realized a change in approach was needed. He decided that Lucerys might learn better from someone closer to his age, someone who could relate to him while teaching him the ways of the sea.

And so the Lord of Driftmark asked you, the best Velaryon-blooded sailor of your generation, to take care of your distant cousin.

At dawn on the third day of Lucerys’ second month in Driftmark, Corlys took him to the harbor. The smell of salt and fish filled the streets and you were busy examining the merchandise arriving. Corlys placed a strong hand on his grandson’s shoulder and called you over.

“Lucerys,” the Sea Snake began, his voice a steady tide, “meet your cousin. She’ll be guiding you today. Listen well, and you may yet find your sea legs.”

Lucerys looked at you with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. He straightened his posture, brushing off the disappointment of his earlier failures. If Driftmark’s legacy ran through his veins, he would prove it—starting with this lesson.
