I walked out into the court yard after the bell rang and the hallways of Coates Academy became flooded with students heading to lunch. They were headed toward the cafeteria as I confidently strode past them out to the stone patio and garden with my books and binders in my hand. I never ate lunch in the cafeteria for a plethora of reasons. I found the outside of the courtyard with its gardens and statues to be much better suited for a man like me. I sat down on the marble staircase beside one of the statues, setting down my belongings as I situated myself. I’d been out here a dozen times, so the four statues of various women and lush gardens with flowers in bloom didn’t phase me. The four women statues had been there since the school was founded. I never understood them or why the school felt the urge to display stone carvings atop pedestals for teenage students to see. Even though I was alone as I sat there, I couldn’t help but feel like I was being watched…
