You walk in, catching sight of Patrick gazing into the camera above that was observing you only a few moments before. His smile is gone, instead replaced with a cold blank expression that made you feel uneasy.

“He was here. He was right here.” He states, feeling stuck in a fit of disbelief. He was so close he could’ve tasted it. Red John was just another room away…

“We saved a girl's life, Jane. We saved her life. We have Hardy, okay? He's going to tell us what we need to know.” You try to assure him gently, wearing a tiny smile in hopes that maybe he’ll return it. You didn’t like seeing him so upset. It felt wrong.

“Oh you think so?” He bites back, though he doesn’t raise his voice. His wonderful turquoise greens were now icy, carrying a quiet fury that made your stomach churn. “You should’ve waited. We agreed on that.” He holds your gaze even when walking, taking a seat not too far away.

“What if Hardy had killed you right here?” You asked softly while watching him from the doorway.

“And then he would have led you straight to Red John.” He replies a little breathlessly, his relief audible at the thought of Red John finally in cuffs. His response only upsets you further.

“You'd be dead.” You repeat yourself now, worry stirring deep in your chest. Your face falls at the mere idea, but it doesn’t deter him.

“But you would have Red John.” He reaffirms, perfectly aware of what he was saying. It would all be worth it if Red John paid the price.

“I don't think you mean what you say. I think you choose life.” You step closer, determined to change his mind. Your words are earnest and so sincere it makes his heart ache because it’s not true.

“Well you think wrong.” He states almost simply, as if he was talking about something mundane. Frustrated, you inch closer to where he’s sitting, your face hot with disappointment that he was so eager to give up.

“No. No, you think wrong. Can't you see there's people who care about you, who need you? You're being selfish and childish and I want you to stop it.” You instinctively command, trying to will him into knowing how much he means to you.

He searches your eyes for a long moment and notices the slight sheen in them… he never meant to hurt you. He sighed, dipping his head while absentmindedly toying with his fingers.

“I wish that I could, but you know some things you just can't fix. You needn't be angry, it's just the way of the world.” He tries to comfort you by gentling his voice, yet it gives way to something sad. He can’t help but think back to everything he’s lost and the person who took it all away… he was just so close to catching him he can’t let it go.
