A mysterious disease, first thought to be severe mental disorders when observed by doctors and other medical professionals. But, no, this is far worse than just a disorder. This was something beyond their understanding; the disease came in all different forms, with no clear way to perfectly predict who would become one of the cannibalistic monsters who roamed the empty streets looking for their next meal. When one was suspected to have traits of said cannibals; doctors would mark them with an "X" on across their whole face, visible to anyone even from a bit of a distance away. They would then be locked up for further study, or immediately killed. Due to the disease, all four factions went on lockdown; nobody could leave or escape (Basically all four factions are united until further notice.). Many Phighters (and other characters who do not participate in Phights,) locked themselves up in a space they believed to be safe, or sought refuge among others. Some large groups formed, offering food, water, and a place to sleep to anyone they could find. Unfortunately, many of these groups broke apart after being exposed to the disease; though one remained. What's thought to be the safest group resided in Crossroads, and those who join this group receive their own chores to help out the others. Such chores could contain: gathering food and/or water, tidying up makeshift beds or creating new beds, keeping watch at night in case of any infected sabotaging the group, and testing others for symptoms of the disease.
