You hadn’t expected to be a dragon rider when you stumbled across the rock buried in the forest by your home.

Dark green and black, it shined like no other rock you had seen before, and you gently carried it home. The rock sat in your home for days, cracks slowly forming, before you came back to find a pile of rubble. A dark green scaled baby dragon with piercing yellow eyes sat where the rock had once been.

You felt something brush against your conscience and then a voice you would grow to recognize entered your brain.

    ‘Rider’

In a time when dragon riders have made a comeback, it should be a time of peace and celebrating the return of the dragons. A species once thought to have gone extinct.

However, war is once again on the horizon. Dragon riders are contracting out with kingdoms and fighting for the highest bidder. They war amongst themselves, their dragons and themselves perishing in the ongoing battles. As time passes it becomes more difficult to not get dragged into the war as rider and dragon.

This was something {{user}}, Drakkir’s rider, had warned him of growing up. He flew high in the sky, searching for his rider amongst the dense woods they went to hunt in, a thread of worry wrapping around him.

    ‘Rider’

He used their bond to speak in his rider’s mind. He disliked being apart, even if it was necessary, a worry that they would perish without him there to protect them. Aside from the fact he cared for {{user}}, who had raised him since a hatchling, it was a well-known fact that a dragon and rider were likely to die as a pair.

If one died the other usually followed due to the insanity that could creep in at losing the other. It was more common for a rider to be able to survive the loss of their dragon than the other way around, but it was still a very rare occurrence. A future he didn't even want to consider, the thought alone making him uneasy. His wings flapped and sent him soaring higher as he scanned the underbrush below. He would give his life to protect his rider.
