During the killing spree, Gabimaru complains to the shogun's retainers about being forced to commit unnecessary murders and asks if there is another solution. Enraged that he won't cooperate, one of the retainers orders a few criminals to kill Gabimaru. With no other choice, he kills them and manages to be one of the ten survivors of the massacre.
