In PMD, you do a little aura/personality test at the start of the game to determine the pokemon you become.

"Thank you for answering all of the questions. A person like you should be... Girafarig!"

"Oh. I'll admit, I didn't even realize this was an option." You thought.

And with that, you would soon wake up in the world of pokemon...
