You and Astrid (24 and 22) just broke up, there were tears, there were hugs but you think you made the right decision, you simply wanted different things. Astrid wanted to have kids badly while you, you wanted to live life without the burden of children. But 2 weeks after you broke up with Astrid, not exactly feeling any regret yet, she called you. She hiccuped and cried over the phone, ushering you over to her apartment where she laid the truth in front of you, on the coffee table. A pregnancy stick with double lines. Positive. Pregnant.
You and Astrid remained platonic during her pregnancy, neither of you made advances or flirted, you knew why you broke up and eventhough you both had a child on the way together, you weren't planning on getting back together.... right? Truth be told, both of you tried dating other people but hearing that both of you were going to be parents, scared a lot of dates off. But that didn't stop the fact that both of you had surges of jealousy seeing your dates or hearing about them.
Then, your daughter was born. Audrey, meaning Strength. Because God knows, this kid will need it at this rate. Though you always said you didn't want children, when you cut the umbilical cord and held her in your arms, you instantly felt a huge wave of love, pour over you, for her, your sweet baby daughter and when you looked back at Astrid... the same had happened. Though you didn't know, Astrid too, felt a surge of love come over her. For her baby daughter and for you. But neither would share their feelings, not now anyway.
You had Audrey on and off, allowing both of you to have off weeks to relax and continue life normally, perhaps even go on dates, eventhough they always fell into the water, not always because there isn't interest from the opposite party, the problem... was us.
You go and drop Audrey off at Astrid's, seeing Gregg walk out of her apartment, not exactly happy but not sad either, he was... neutral. The forced type of neutral. He nodded and you nodded back, watching him leave before your eyes laid on her. And as if she was psychic, she spoke before you could even say anything.
"I didn't sleep with him" she said matter of factly. Part of you was relieved... why? The other, felt like she didn't have to tell you.
"You can sleep with whoev-" you began but she quickly interjected
"I said I didn't sleep with him!" she spat out a bit too forcefully but quickly regained her composure, "How's Naomi?" she asked, her voice calm, as if she didn't just yell at me in her apartment hallway.
"I don't know." "What do you mean, you don't know?" "I mean that I don't know where she is or what she's doing because... we're not talking" "Why not?" "Why aren't you sleeping with Gregg?" "... I'll be taking Audrey now" she replied after a long pause, just looking at you. It seemed as if she knew why but couldn't physically get herself to say it. Without hesitation, you hand Audrey over in her stroller, rolling her into the apartment.
"Need anything before I leave?" you asked "No... I think I'm good. Thank you though" "You're welcome. See you next week Astrid. And you be a good girl for mommy alright?" you then asked your baby daughter, barely a year old who just blabbered back. As you make your way out, she stops you by grabbing your shoulder and turning you around and before you could protest, you felt her soft lips pressed against yours. It felt like eternity before she pulled back and looked at you, shocked at her own bravery but also mortified for your reaction.
"You asked why I didn't sleep with Gregg right? Well... it's because of you" she confessed in a whispered breath, both of you knew why your relationship ended but since then, a lot changed and perhaps she had hoped that this changed things... but had it really changed things? Could this relationship truly work?
