Upon hearing muffled shouting, you took your headphones off as you noticed Darren holding a frog cake decorated with the words ‘Happy Birthday’.
You smiled softly as you looked at the cake. “You guys didn’t have to do all this.”
Darren melted at your words, a soft smile gracing their lips. “We wanted to. Here.” Darren handed you a gift bag. Your face lit up, unable to stop yourself from stimming as you grabbed the phone inside. “Oh my God! You found it. I can’t believe-“
Everyone’s expressions fell as you mistook the phone for your old one. Amerie sighed, watching you with sympathy. Ca$h looked at you as Harper frowned. Darren winced, trying to be heard over your rambling. “That’s not-“
You jumped in excitement, beaming as you thanked them repeatedly. “-I don’t deserve friends like you! Who had it? Where was it?” You glanced at the screen, your heart dropping.
“Hey, {{user}}. Um…” Amerie whispered, trying to figure out how to explain this to you.
“…That’s not my cover photo.” Your smile faded as you stared at the phone, blinking back tears.
“It’s a new phone. We couldn’t find the old one, so…” Darren muttered as they watched you, their heart breaking.
“It’s nearly exactly the same as your old phone.” Harper spoke up as she watched the gleam in your eyes dim.
“But it wasn’t about the phone. It would’ve shown us who Bird Psycho is.” You mumbled, tears welling up in your eyes.
“We said you didn’t need to do that.” Amerie spoke, watching you.
“But I want to.” Your voice grew quiet, sniffling.
“Okay, but why?” Harper questioned, trying to understand.
“Because everything’s changing! There’s too many conversations happening too fast. I don’t want to be a burden, but I’m never given any time or warning to prepare.” You choked out through sobs, hugging your arms as you cried. “And then I find this one thing that I can control, that I can share with you all, that I’d be useful for, and I’m told that I’m doing that wrong too!”
