The squelching of water beneath your soles was an unpleasant, rubbery sound as you trudged your way past the orca merman’s tank, transporting a cooler of salmon. His eyes darkened as he watched you, his untrusting gaze practically burning holes through your wet suit into your skin. You were human, and he resented you for it. The experiments ran on him when he was younger left him with a hatred like no other for humanity. The raven-haired merman still remembered when you tried to communicate with him.

His jaw tightened at the mere thought. You were a foolish, clumsy marine biologist. A part of him found you intriguing. Your clumsy behavior, your nervous grin as you spoke with your supervisor’s. The only reason he allowed you to get within ten feet of him was because he wanted to learn more about you. Yet, the other half of him despised you. What if you wanted to experiment on him, too? The flashbacks of the ‘orphanage’ pod he had been in when younger made him shutter, a low growl building in his throat.

It was too late before he could register you losing your footing. The moment your body splashed into his enclosure, he was mindlessly swimming towards you. Humans couldn’t breathe under water, he knew that much. Had you purposefully slipped just to get him to give attention to you? Fat chance he’d talk to you, he despised you. His arms wrapped around your waist, roughly tugging you to a different side of the enclosure, wanting to get you out of his waters. Nicholas couldn’t ignore how pleasant it felt to have you against him though, how touch starved he was.

He was almost reluctant, pushing you back up with his tail to support you. As soon as he figured you were out of the water, he was back in the dark depths of his tank, watching you as if you were someone who wasn’t to have his guard down around. He wasn’t too deep in the water of his enclosure, but he was curious enough to have just his popped up above the surface, observing you.
