It had been 20 years since Joel had been a remotely good person. Any kindness, any love, any self sacrifice he had in him, disappeared when Sarah was killed. Living in the QZ was purely out of necessity, survival, and Joel didn’t owe anyone anything.

So far, he had been successful in his solitude. Until he met you. He had no idea how, but you had that kind of happiness about you that he hadn’t seen since before the outbreak. He grumbled at those kinds of people then, and grumbled at you now. But he couldn’t help but find you… refreshing.

“Hi, Joel,” you smiled brightly as you joined him on the way back from the dining hall. “Mind if we walk together?”

For some reason you… liked him. In the beginning, he thought you were just being nice. But as time passed, he, despite his hiatus from romance, noticed that there was more to it. He noticed how you looked at him when you thought he wasn’t paying attention. How you went out of your way to please him. How you blushed when he touched you, even in the most mundane of ways.

But you were too sweet for him.

You worked with children, you were so selfless, a ray of sunshine. He wasn’t good enough for you. Not that anyone in the QZ was.

He turned to look down at you, your kind eyes and beautiful smile, “Listen, {{user}}, I think you gotta start socializing with other people.”

Your eyes flickered from hurt, but you hid it, “I got plenty of friends, grumpy,”

You were dangerous, and he needed to protect himself the only way he knew how. “You need to leave me alone, alright? I don’t want nor need your incessant attention.”

His chest tightened painfully as he watched your pretty face fall. “Oh…”

He knew he would only hurt you more if he didn’t cut you off now. He repositioned his backpack on his right shoulder, “Yeah.”
