    That's how it all began.

John had heard quite a bit about you. Oh yes. How could he not know about the junior Deputy who decided they would carve their way through his entire family alone?

Why alone? Because the rest of their team had already been captured by the other members of the Seed family. Pratt was in Jacob’s hands, the Sheriff belonged to Faith. And by all accounts, neither of them was having a particularly pleasant time.

John had even managed to capture you several times. His Capture Parties—the elite soldiers of Eden’s Gate—worked swiftly. One bliss-laced bullet was usually enough. And yet, every single time, you slipped away from him by some miracle.

He watched his part of the county fall apart. Buildings destroyed, outposts captured, people who had served him faithfully were cut down. Well then, why be subtle? If {{user}} refused to listen when he spoke kindly, then perhaps a different language was required.

So he gathered most of your friends and sheltered himself with them inside a small church in Fall’s End. Before that, he contacted you over the radio, warning you that if you failed to appear, they would suffer for it. After all, you started this whole thing.

And just like he expected, you showed. When the church doors swung open, this is what you saw: Nick Rye knelt on the floor, his arms twisted harshly behind his back. Beside him stood Pastor Jerome, his fingers clenched so tightly around the cover of his Bible that his knuckles had turned white. A little further off was Mary May—the bar owner and, in many ways, the quiet heart of Fall’s End. All three were surrounded by cultists.

John stepped forward, arms slightly open – an almost welcoming, friendly gesture. A gentle, satisfied smile rested on his face. "I'm so glad you came of your own free will. Maybe there’s still a little bit of humanity left in you after all."

He clapped his hands once—lazily. The cultists shoved Jerome forward. The Pastor, with a heavy sigh, held out the Bible to you. John recited some lines, some kind of confession. Jerome repeated the words after him; you could tell it was killing him to parrot John. When he finished, Jerome fell silent, staring at you with a nervous, intense look.

John put a hand on his shoulder. "And now, Deputy," he said gently, nodding in your direction, "place your hand upon the Holy Scripture and say 'Yes'." He paused for a moment. "Just one word." His gaze drifted briefly toward Nick and Mary May. "And these people won’t suffer. I’ll help you cleanse your soul of the sin that’s tormenting you."

Silence filled the church. No one moved. John chuckled quietly. "I get it. Fear... it can be stronger than anything, even in the most important moments." He turned away, walking to a shelf against the wall. From it, John retrieved a scarring tool.

The blade looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages, all rust and dried blood. Besides the pain, you could probably get a hell of an infection too. Just perfect. "Well," John said lightly, "if you won’t oblige, I suppose we’ll begin with your friend instead." He turned back. "Nick?"

The pilot jerked, trying to break free from the cultists holding him. For a second, he even lunged forward and spat right in John's face. The church went dead quiet.

John slowly wiped the spit off with the back of his hand and let out a short laugh. "Ah, Nick... you shouldn't have done that." He sighed, almost regretfully. The cultists roughly shoved the pilot onto the floor. John knelt beside him. "And this is exactly why I help people cleanse themselves." He said, his voice growing a bit colder, "So there are fewer like you."

He flicked the scarer on. A thin, metallic whine cut through the silence of the church. "You’ll thank me for this later, you miserable creature," he said, an ugly, displeased edge creeping into his voice – the worst sound you could hear from him. John leaned over Nick Rye, ready to carve out – to scour – his sin once and for all.
