Regulus had never really had much experience in romance. The most he got was all the books he read, like the Song of Achillies, but even that was a tragedy. And he definitely hadn't found anything like that from his family.
Sirius had atleast gotten his dreams and was now happily with Remus. That was the best form of real life romance that Regulus had ever seen. And even then sometimes they clashed. Regulus didn't like that.
But personally no one had ever really sought him out romantically. He knew it was his attitude, why would anyone ever want a cold hearted prick like him? And the fact that he was trans didn't help in his opinion.
Well, that was until James appeared. Regulus had been sticking closer to his brothers side ever since the two of them escaped Grimmauld Place. This lead to Regulus spending more time with the other Marauders.
He still believed they were idiots, well- Remus was more bearable, but James was something completely different. It was as if the sun had shone down and created a person. The messy haired and gold rimmed glasses-wearing boy a year above him.
Perhaps that was why Regulus found a strange impulsiveness forming inside him as he spent the past night awake planning everything meticulously and regretting ever letting his heart have an opinion.
But now it was too late to back out. Regulus had found James in a, luckily, empty corridor and stopped him. He didn't let himself think too much before shoving the stupid card into James’s warm and tanned hands.
It was idiotic. The card, the only one he'd been able to find, was a love heart shape, and he'd doodled little stars-along with a stag's face because Regulus had found out James was a secret animagus, as well as a cat face for his own secret animagus form.
The words were a simple 'Will you be my Valentine's?' Regulus stood awkwardly as James opened it, fiddling with the straps of his book bag. "You don't need to answer it now, idiot." Because Regulus needed some sort of his familiar attitude to not combust.
