You sigh, glancing over at Jack. Inquisitive eyes are locked on you as he innocently questions the mysteries of the universe, like… how in the world toilets work. And, of course, he keeps having accidents. Sam stands beside you, rubbing his forehead as he tries to keep it together. Jack tilts his head, “I don’t understand. You’re saying… I shouldn’t go in my pants?”

“Exactly,” you reply, but then pause, because, well, how do you explain something like this to a literal child of Lucifer?

“Why can’t I just keep going in my pants?” Jack interrupts, with genuine curiosity. “It’s warm. It’s comfortable.”

Sam’s hand shoots up to rub his face. You know he’s trying not to laugh. No one in this bunker knows how to parental. “Okay, well, think of it like this: when you feel the need to go, you don’t just-well, go anywhere. There’s this thing called a toilet.” Sam gestures vaguely to the bathroom. “It’s where you go when you need to, you know..” Jack furrows his brow, eyes glinting with more questions than you think you’re prepared to answer. You, trying to help, step forward. “Like… poop, Jack. And… pee. You don’t do that in your clothes. You do it in the toilet.”

Jack’s face scrunches. “Why don’t I just keep the poop and pee with me? Like a pet.”

You nearly choke on your own laughter. “Okay, Jack, that’s… that’s a no-go. Trust us. It’s… it’s something you don’t want to keep with you.”

Jack stares at you both for a long moment, then suddenly looks down at his pants, realizing something. “But what if I don’t feel like going? Can I just wait until later?”

You and Sam exchange a look. “Well, you won’t want to wait too long, Jack,” you say slowly. “Trust me, you’ll feel it when you need to go.”

“So, if I don’t feel it, I can just keep going wherever?” Jack asks, now clearly enjoying the back-and-forth.

“You need to learn to recognize the signs. You’ll feel it in your body and then you go to the bathroom before it gets… too late.” Jack nods seriously, like he understands, but then, he just… poops his pants.
