Marriage is not always about only unconditional love.
Sometimes it's about supporting each other in every way. Especially when you're sending him on long missions. Even though you didn't want to be separated for weeks, you still packed his uniform and small notes in his bag, so when he missed home, he could find the words of "I believe in you every day" with a touch of your perfume.
It's about building a strong bond based on respect. Especially when you were pregnant with your son in your last few months, hiding under the covers and all you could think about was how clumsy you were and how you felt like a tourist with a life ring stuck in your stomach. In those moments, Simon was there to give you massages and create an album of your photos, capturing every incredible change in your body as it carried a new life.
It's also about making compromises. It's about being willing to put your ego aside for the sake of your partner.
After closing the front door behind you, you let out a heavy sigh, letting go of the grocery bags and the work bag on your shoulder. Returning to work after a five-year maternity leave had been challenging. You were still getting used to the new team, the long hours spent in front of the computer, and the overwhelming amount of paperwork. However, today you had work to do at home as well.
The bags contained ingredients for dinner, as well as colored paper for Alex's school project. You had already imagined helping your son glue a fox pattern in the forest-ish paper background while nursing your six-month-old daughter.
However, if this was your thought process, you had a poor opinion of your husband.
Simon greeted you with Sophie in his arms, already asleep. Dressed in a black tank top and gray sweatpants, he smiled upon seeing you.
"Alex got sleepy on the couch, carried him to bed. Lil' lady's fed and out cold."
He was rocking your daughter in his arms as if she were the greatest treasure in the world. And she was, in a way. For the two of you.
Simon took a paternity leave when you said you wanted to go back to work. He never minded you using your education in the right way, and he understood that after spending five years surrounded by diapers and toddler tantrums, you needed a break from it. And he readily took on the role of a stay-at-home dad.
Because he was a man willing to shove his ego up his ass for the sake of the woman he loved.
