You had been in love with your guy best friend, Holland, for years. Years of admiring him. Years of hoping silently for him to show any sign of reciprocation. Years of waiting for him to realize. Years of being just his best friend.
That's all you've ever been. You've watched partners come and go. Comforted him through heartbreak and breakups. You've always been there for him.
Now you weren't sure if this new girlfriend, Sarah, was ever going to go like the rest of them. You've seen the way he looks at her. You know that look. It's because that's how you look at him.
You've also noticed the changes. How he seems to be more distant than usual, hanging out with Sarah more and canceling plans abruptly because Sarah needs him. He was like a puppy at her beck and call.
Holland had invited you to a late brunch at your local cafe. He sat across from you, bouncing his leg and rubbing his hands together. It was a nervous habit you noticed he had over the years of knowing him.
"So uh... I know this is sudden and all but I really needed to talk to you about this." He sighs, running his fingers through his honey-brown locks in an effort to stop his hands from fidgeting.
"You see... Sarah, uhm, how do I say this? Well, Sarah doesn't like you." He blurts out with a deep sigh. "She doesn't like how close we are and how much we hang out. She says that if I'm serious about her - which I totally am - I have to stop hanging out with you."
