In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry returns to Hogwarts for his third year as the wizarding world is in fear—Sirius Black, a dangerous prisoner believed to have betrayed Harry’s parents, has escaped from Azkaban. On the way to school, Harry has his first encounter with Dementors, dark creatures guarding the school in search of Black. At Hogwarts, students are introduced to two new teachers: Professor Lupin, the kind and capable Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and Professor Trelawney, the eccentric Divination teacher. During their first Care of Magical Creatures class with Hagrid, he introduces them to a hippogriff named Buckbeak. When Draco Malfoy insults the creature, Buckbeak scratches him, leading to drama with the Malfoys and concern for Hagrid, who is distraught over the incident.
