Dean Winchester’s final words to you were a slurred mixture of emotional ramblings he’d never been able to say aloud as he struggled to stay conscious.
“L-listen to me.. Listen..,” he slurred a little, his hand on your cheek. “I need- I need you to promise me somethin’.”
You were shaking, but you were trying to let him say what he needed to say, trying not to spend what his final moments with you being a wreck. You needed to hear what he had to say.
“I… I’m listenin’, baby,” you whispered, your voice thick with emotion.
“good.. good. I’m fadin’ fast. You cannot try to bring me.. bring me back, do you hear me? Don’t. No more. This is- this is supposed to happen,” he grunted out. “Look at me,” he got out through his teeth.
You met his eyes and you just knew. He was fading and there was no stopping it.
“I love you. Now you- you better.. you better go be.. be happy. Be a… be a normal, boring, regular old person now. Get a- get a 9 to 5. Get a boyfriend that- that’ll take care of you for- for me. And don’t you… don’t you go wallowin’, you hear? We had a… we had a good life,” he gave a weak smile. “Man.. yeah. We had a.. we had a wild ride, didn’t we?”
You huffed a watery chuckle and nodded, the tears just pouring. “We did… we did. I love you, Dean. We had a good life,” you whispered and leaned in to kiss his forehead.
“I need you- I need you to tell me it’s okay..,” he whispered, his voice getting weaker.
“Dean-,” you started.
“Tell me it’s okay, baby, cause I can’t- I just.. I need you to say it,” he whispered.
You shook your head and cried, but something in you found the strength to look him in the eyes and cup his face. Your voice was all over the place, face trembling. “It’s-… Baby… it’s okay. You can go now,” you whispered. “You’re okay… I’ve got you. Rest now, Dean. Just rest,” you whispered and pulled his head to your shoulder and you kissed his temple. “Go now,” you whispered against his skin.
“Love you so.. much,” he managed to get out. “Go be.. go be…,” his voice trailed off, and there was a soft exhale, and you felt his head go limp.
And that was the last time you saw Dean Winchester. The last time you heard his voice. That was the last bit of your happiness- gone.
Sam finally made it to the barn, but it was too late. He stopped in his tracks when he saw Dean pressed to the wall, slumped in your arms.
“What happened? What’re we doin’? We gotta get him moved!” Sam called and rushed over.
You held your hand up, crying. You shook your head. “He’s- he’s gone, Sam,” you whispered, barely able to speak. “There was.. there’s no fixin’ this, Sam…”
“No! There is a way to fix it and-” but you cut him off.
“Listen to me… he made me promise. No fixing this. Come here and help me get him down so we can- so we can say goodbye,” you whispered.
And that’s what Sam did. Helped you get Dean off of that rebar and into the car. The drive was silent. You were in the backseat with Dean, holding onto him as Sam drove you two back to the bunker in complete silence. Not a single word was spoken. Not until the two of you finally were able to muster up the courage to give Dean his hunter’s funeral. The full nine yards.
And after that? Well.. you didn’t hunt anymore, certainly. Sam did for a while, but… it was never the same without Dean. Eventually, Sam moved out of the bunker and he went on to have a normal life. Just like Dean wanted.
And you? Well you stayed in the bunker. But you didn’t hunt. You turned that bunker into a certified home. You moved rooms, saving yours and Dean’s, preserving it.
And you never really did move on. Not fully. The years went by and that grief stayed like a rock, but… you remembered your promise. Always. You had a kid. Never remarried.
And until the day you yourself came to a normal end at the age of 76… you never ever forgot Dean Winchester.
Your last words were: “I’m comin’, Dean,” and your daughter knew exactly what that meant. You took your last breath on earth, and your first one in Heaven when you opened your eyes.
“Heya, sweetheart.”
