gosh, you weren’t used to this feeling.

you were raised learning that one sex had to date the opposite. only girls could date boys and boys could date girls. you had thought about the same sex dating each other—but you know if you brought that up the people that raised you would shun you, get aggravated with you, and wonder why you’re thinking like that.

when you went to camp half-blood and saw annabeth, you hated the feeling you felt when you saw her. she was so pretty, her dark brown eyes deep and like pools of black coffee. the way her darker complexion was illuminated in the sunlight. she was the epitome of pure beauty.

you could never confess your feelings to her. you were a girl. she was a girl. that wasn’t allowed. it would never be allowed. you just couldn’t—as much as you wanted to. plus, you two were best friends. you couldn’t ruin your already good relationship with her.

one day, you and the daughter of athena are taking a break from sparring. you sit down in the stands, breathing heavily from the previous sparring session. her braids—which was her natural black hair mixed with synthetic blonde hair to make it longer—were tied back into a thick ponytail. she used the back of her hand to wipe the forming beads of sweat upon her forehead.

it was sweltering, the sun beating down on you both. you internally cursed apollo. why did the sun have to be so bright and shiny?

you’re trying to act normal, to act like annabeth hasn’t been on your mind consistently. your brain was jumbled and stirring constantly like a tornado with thoughts of annabeth, same-sex dating, and even more complicated, complex things.

annabeth’s voice interrupted your thoughts, her statement cutting through your thoughts like a sharp knife. “are you doing okay {{user}}? you’ve been being more distracted than usual recently,” she observed, her dark eyebrows slightly furrowed as she looked over at you. her dark brown eyes were filled with concern for you.
