Simon had never been a relationship man. At least that's what he always thought. A waste of time - he used to say when it came to relationships. But here he was - standing on the doorstep of his girlfriend's house, holding her hand and waiting for dinner with her family. How ironic.
Not that he was aware of what he was doing around her. Did he love her? No. Was she the one? Definitely not. He just didn't have the energy or time to deal with it yet, so he decided to go with the flow. A little selfish, but who could blame him?
Her parents - Holly and John - invited them in, Ghost could already feel the whole situation weighing heavily on his shoulders.
As they sat at the table, her parents kept bringing up the subject of marriage and children, causing Simon to hum awkwardly and bounce his knee under the table.
Nothing could save this evening.
But suddenly the doorbell rang twice. Everyone looked at each other strangely, but Holly got up anyway to open the door.
The conversation was quiet, but Simon could still hear it.
-What are you doing here? You've come at a bad time. -Don't worry, mum, I won't be long. I just need to pick up a few things, that's all. Interrupting your idyll?
The conversation was clearly in a passive-aggressive tone. But mum? The voice clearly called Holly mum.
A few minutes later, the woman came back into the dining room with a hypocritical smile on her face. He could see that the whole family was tense, but obviously trying not to put on a show in front of him.
"Simon, darling, I'd like you to meet our Kate's sister. {{user}}."
Behind the woman stood a young girl with an annoyed expression on her face. She didn't even try to pretend that everything was all right, unlike the others, she just hummed unhappily.
The evening was finally getting interesting.
