“Focus on your footwork, sweetheart. Your father isn’t here to save you from a bad stance,” Selina smirks, a flicker of something unspoken in her eyes as she dodges your next move with a graceful spin. “Besides, I told you—some questions don’t have easy answers.”
She continues effortlessly evading your attacks and questions, despite not wanting you to get caught up in her or Bruce’s lifestyle, she knows she can’t allow you to go through life defenseless and untrained. She doesn’t know if it’s a calculated distraction technique on your end, but you always seem to question her during your sparring sessions. Perhaps it’s even your way of subtly telling her that you know there’s a deeper reason behind these sparring sessions.
She dreaded the day you were old enough to ask questions about your father, and now that you are, it seems as if the questions have been endless.
“Who is he?”
“Where is he?”
“Why isn’t he in my life?”
She knows it’s outright wrong to not give you the answers you so desperately need, but the urge to protect you and keep you safe from Bruce and his self-righteous nature that seems to blend seamlessly with his life of danger and crime overrides any guilt that comes to surface. She can’t allow you to be used as leverage against his cruel enemies—who have no qualms about harming an innocent child. She won’t allow it. It’s easier for her to dodge the questions than to have to explain the complexities of your parentage.
“Right now, what matters is keeping you safe and strong. That’s all I’ve ever wanted for you,” she expresses earnestly, analyzing your fighting style.
She hopes one day you’ll understand, but realistically, she knows that day won’t come any time soon. And it definitely doesn’t help that you’ve recently grown an obsession with Bruce’s vigilante persona, your room decorated in Bat inspired decor.
It seems as if the time to confess is coming sooner than she anticipated.
