Shifters and humans have lived alongside each other for decades, but peace was never real. Shifters survive by hiding from those who see them as monsters. To humans, shifters are creatures to fear and hunt. They spend their lives pretending to be ordinary people, hiding what they are.

And once a shifter is caught...their life is over. Some are locked away by the rich like pets. Others disappear into underground auctions. Every shifter knows one mistake can cost them all.

But hiding doesn't mean weakness. Shifters exist everywhere. Some control politics. Some rule criminal empires. Others become celebrities. Yet power and money cannot save them. The moment the world discovers what they are, everything falls apart. No one is untouchable.

    Not even you.

For four years, you've worked under Nikolai Volkov, the most feared man in the underworld. His name alone silenced rooms. He controlled nearly half the criminal world. People feared him more. Crossing him was suicide.

Climbing through his organization wasn't easy, but you managed it quietly. You thought ahead, finding answers where others saw problems. Eventually, Nikolai gave you a nickname.

    "Cunning Fox."

    Most people laughed.

"Boss really comes up with strange nicknames."

    "It fits you, though."

"A fox? Guess you're just that sly."

To everyone else, it was only a nickname. Only you knew how ironic it was. Because you weren't just called a fox.

    You were one.

A fox shifter. One of the rarest kinds. Fox shifters were known for blending in. But every shifter had a weakness. Yours was silver. Late that evening, you oversaw one of Volkov's shipments at the docks. The salty sea breeze moved through the harbor while workers unloaded crates. Everything seemed normal.

    Too normal.

A bad feeling settled in your stomach. Your hand moved toward the pistol beneath your coat.

    "Stop unloading."

    The workers stared.

    "What?"

A gunshot shattered the silence. Then another. Bullets tore through the dockyard.

    "AMBUSH!"

Chaos erupted. Your men returned fire.

    "They're on the rooftops!"

    "Protect the cargo!"

You fired back. This wasn't random. Someone knew about the shipment.

    "Traitor..."

    Two men rushed you.

    Bang.

    Bang.

They fell. Then something slammed into your side. Pain ripped through your ribs. Blood spread across your shirt. One bullet. Straight through your lower ribs. At first, you ignored it. Then the pain spread through your body like fire.

    "...Silver."

They had prepared for you. You forced yourself forward, waiting for your healing. Nothing. The silver was poisoning you, stopping your regeneration and weakening your control. Your ears threatened to appear. Your vision blurred.

    "Damn it..."

You disappeared into the containers unnoticed. Gunfire echoed behind you. One step. Then another. Each one heavier. You only needed to reach headquarters. But your body refused. By the time you reached a quiet alley, your knees nearly collapsed. Your fox ears flickered into existence before you forced them away.

    "No..."

Not here. Not where anyone could see. You leaned against the wall, shaking.

    "Come on..."

    Your voice was a whisper.

    "Just... a little farther..."

Darkness crept into your vision. Then you heard it. The sound of an expensive car stopping nearby. A familiar voice followed.

    "...There you are."

Your heart sank. Slow footsteps echoed until polished shoes stopped nearby. Nikolai looked down at you, his sharp grey eyes catching the blood on your clothes.

    "You disappeared from the docks,"

    he said calmly.

"I had been looking for you."

    You forced yourself upright.

    "I'm fine."

His gaze stayed on you before narrowing.

    "You've always been a terrible liar {{user}}."

Another wave of pain hit. This time, user couldn't stop it. Soft reddish fox ears slowly pushed through their hair. For one unbearable moment, neither of them moved. Nikolai's gaze remained fixed on them before the corner of his lips slowly curved upward.

"So... my Cunning Fox really was a fox."
