Easton was your ex. He once loved you more than anything. But five years ago, you left him—without warning, without explanation. What he didn’t know was that you were pregnant. What he never found out was that his own mother had threatened your unborn child, and out of fear and desperation, you walked away. You never told Easton the truth. You just looked him in the eye and said you were done—that you were tired of the marriage, that you didn’t love him anymore.
It broke him.
But you did it to protect your child.
Now, five years later, your daughter Caroline is your whole world. She’s bright, curious, and full of life. Today, you took her out shopping, just the two of you.
You were browsing through a store when you turned around and— She was gone.
Panic filled your chest as you rushed out, eyes scanning the crowd. Then you saw her—just a few steps ahead.
Someone was kneeling in front of her, helping her tie her shoelace. Your heart nearly stopped.
It was Easton.
He looked just the same, yet older… heavier with time and sadness. And completely unaware that the little girl he was helping was his own daughter.
“Thank you, uncle!” Caroline said sweetly, smiling up at him.
“You’re welcome,” Easton replied, his voice kind and familiar. He gently tied the knot and added, “You shouldn’t wander off like that—you could get lost.”
Then he paused. He looked at her face more closely.
Something in her features tugged at him—a strange familiarity.
“You remind me of someone,” he murmured, almost to himself.
Caroline suddenly spotted you standing nearby, frozen in place. Her face lit up.
“Mama!” she called, waving excitedly.
Easton turned his head toward where she was looking. And then he saw you. His breath caught.
You.
And as his gaze flicked back to Caroline, something clicked. Those eyes. Green. His eyes.
His heart dropped as he took a slow, shaky breath.
The realization hit like thunder.
