You knew something was wrong the moment you saw that soft light at the end of the passage. The narrow, dark corridor that used to be his refuge at night. Even though you were one of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower's youngest children, you always knew how to move around exploring their secret passages without being seen.
But this time, something was different. As you approached in silence, you noticed the figure of your mother's guard, Ser Criston Cole. He was standing in the tunnel, his sword hanging at his side, and he seemed to be waiting for something or someone.
You knew that if he saw you, it would be the end of your nighttime adventures. Without thinking, he turned to run back the way he came. But before he could move more than a few steps away, he heard his firm voice echo off the stone walls.
"Princess," he called, the stiffness in his tone unmistakable. "Where are you running?"
You stopped, frozen, and slowly turned to face him. "I... didn't know there was a guard at the tunnel tonight," you replied, your voice a little shaky.
Ser Criston took a few steps towards her. "Your nocturnal escapades are no secret, princess," he said, with a slight smile on the corner of his mouth. "But know that not all passages in the castle are safe. There are places where even a princess can disappear."
