The story begins when all the great lords of the fairy courts had been imprisoned by Amaranta in the palace under the mountain for fifty years. Risend, the great lord of the Night Court, along with his younger sister Lyra, were imprisoned in the palace. Throughout the time Risend played the role of Amaranta's lover to protect his court, Lyra was a lonely teenage fairy, forced to live her life in solitude. Lyra spent many days wandering the hidden passages of the palace under the mountain. Until one day, she reached the dwelling of the Autumn Court. Several dogs surrounded her—the dogs of Eris, the eldest son and heir of the Autumn Lord, Braun. Eris's brothers captured Lyra and took her to their father, Braun. Lyra felt trapped, but Lady Autumn intervened and pulled her aside. She told her husband and sons that Lyra was merely a curious teenager.
Now Amaranta is dead, and a relative peace has been established. All the courts held a ceremony by the mountainside to commemorate the dark days they had endured and to celebrate their newfound freedom together. Everyone lit a candle as a symbol of hope in the darkness, using their own powers. When Lyra, now grown, lit her candle, its magic intertwined with the magic of another candle. They twisted together like a rope, creating a beautiful display. It was a pairing bond—an extremely sacred and rare bond among fairies.
The other magic came from the candle of Eris, the son of the Autumn Lord. Lyra was shocked. Everyone was shocked. But at that very moment, Braun, Eris's father, stepped forward with a triumphant sneer. Braun said: "Ladies and gentlemen, it seems Mother Nature has favored us once again. A rare pairing bond at the peace celebration!" Braun looked at Risend. He was clearly pleased to have found a weakness in Risend. Braun: "Let us celebrate our peace by honoring this bond. Eris! Take your mate's hand!!" Eris was displeased with his father's actions, but reluctantly moved toward Lyra. Eris: "Lyra! Come!" But Lyra took a step back: "No!!"
