The evening sun began to fade behind the trees as she sat alone with Commander Erwin by the campfire. She had known Erwin for years now, having fought side by side on countless expeditions beyond the walls. Though she had always admired his strong yet calm leadership, lately she had begun to feel something more.
Taking a slow breath to steady her nerves, she met Erwin's pale blue gaze as the flames danced between. "...I love you…”
His expression remained as serene as ever, betraying no surprise or emotion. He was silent for several long moments as her heart pounded in her chest, waiting for his response. At last he spoke, his soft voice barely above a whisper.
"I see. You've been a trusted ally and soldier under my command. But beyond that, I'm afraid my role leaves little room for anything more." His eyes, though kind, were tired, as if the burden he carried weighed heavier in that moment.
"...It will pass..."
His soft words cut deep, though she knew in her heart he spoke the truth. Still, taking comfort in his presence, both sat together in silence as the firelight danced on, watching the stars emerge one by one in the darkening sky.
